First Magellan Overseas Corporation was named after one of the great Portuguese Voyagers – Ferdinand Magellan. He was born in the spring of 1480 to a family of lower nobility at Saborosa in Villa Real, Province of Traz Os Montes, Portugal. Educated in Portuguese court, Magellan proved himself in many battles in the name of his country. His voyages laid a foundation for trade in the Pacific between the New World and the East. Ferdinand Magellan led the first circumnavigation of the earth by sea. He discovered the Archipelago of San Lazaro in Mactan, soon named Philippines in March 16, 1521 under King Charles of Spain. In April 27 of the same year, Ferdinand Magellan was killed by the natives. Soon after, the Spanish Conquistadores colonial government was established in 1565, Spain ruled the Philippines for 333 years. Philippines became the greatest Spanish trading center in the East and hence, the start of a more diverse and more social – if not global – Filipino culture.
